Tractor cutting red clover. Clover draws nitrogen from the atmosphere into the soil (bacteria living in the root nodules fix the nitrogen using energy supplied by the plant). Most grass/clover mixes for winter use are made into silage, it is cut and wilted in rows before being collected by a forage harvester and then packed tightly in a silage clamp to remove the oxygen.
