Organic grain shortage – challenges facing the organic grain market - June 2008
Organic producers are increasingly reliant on imported organic cereals as domestic cereal production struggles to keep up with demand from the livestock sector. This problem has become more apparent this year as the limited allowance for feeding non-organic feed to ruminants expired in January.

Northern Ireland crop study
Many people assume that organic crops will not perform as well as conventional (non-organic) crops grown with artificial fertilisers and the use of a range of pesticides to control weeds, pests and diseases. This assumption implies reduced yield, but is this the whole story? Yield may well be lower, but input costs for fertilisers and pesticides may be zero and the value of the crop per tonne higher. The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Greenmount Campus, Northern Ireland has investigated this question with interesting results.
